Punch Imlach became the first general manager of the Sabres when the team was established in 1970. Imlach was instrumental in shaping the Sabres during their early years in the NHL. He served as the Sabres' general manager from 1970 to 1972 and again from 1979 to 1982. Under his management, the Sabres made several significant moves and developed a competitive team. His influence was felt in various aspects of the team's development, from drafting players to making key trades.
Joe Crozier was hired as the Sabres' head coach in 1971, just a year after the team’s inception. Under his leadership, the Sabres experienced some early success and made their first playoff appearance in the 1973-74 season. He was known for his strong coaching abilities and his emphasis on discipline and structure.
